Life Giving Music and Dance DVD

The NTML has launched a new mental health resource, the DVD Life Giving Music and Dance (Walna-gurrupanamirr manikay ga bungul), to create awareness of suicide within Aboriginal communities.

The DVD showcases the many ways in which traditional and contemporary Aboriginal music and dance help to maintain positively sound mental health and wellbeing.

Filmed in the remote East Arnhem communities of Milingimbi and Elcho Island, the DVD was produced in response to community-initiated dance and music events, which celebrate the lives of those lost to suicide.

The DVD is spoken in the Djambarrpuynu (Yolngu) language and includes English subtitles. It features community elders, Aboriginal mental health workers, musicians and young people who each give their accounts of the ways in which music and dance have positively influenced their lives, developed strong cultural connections and helped to build personal resilience.
